APA Citation and Style Guides

Here are some resources for assistance with APA Style.

APA Image Citation

To cite an image, make sure to include at least:

  • The title
  • The creator, artist, or photographer
  • The source (book, journal, database, poster, or website)

Lastname, A. A. (Year of composition). Title of Work. [Format]. Place work resides. 

Example:

Carvaggio, M. (1606). Death of the Virgin. [Painting]. Retrieved from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caravaggio

Jevbratt, L. (2005). Migration (a map of the Internet) [Digital visualization]. Retrieved from http://128.111.69.4/~jevbratt/1_to_1/3/migration/

Rodin, A. (1902). The thinker [Bronze and marble sculpture]. Paris, France: Musée Rodin.

Attribution

Attribution is for when you use an image or other  another visual media source for presentations, papers, or other formats that do not require a specific publication style. You still should include enough information for others to locate the image themselves. 

When attributing an image, try to include the following information:

  • Creator of the work
  • Title of the work
  • Year(s) when it was composed/completed
  • Materials involved in creating the work
  • Institution that houses the work
  • Date the work was retrieved
  • Website from which the work was retrieved (a hyperlink if the format allows).
