Communication Databases

The following databases will help you locate periodical literature about communication (including scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles).

Kanopy Streaming Video This link opens in a new window
Kanopy Streaming Video offers over 10,000 films and television programs representing a wide variety of disciplines. Kanopy focuses heavily on documentaries, international, and "indie" films, although feature films from major production companies are also included in the database.
Communication and Mass Media Complete This link opens in a new window
This database contains the full-text of articles from over 400 communication journals. It also includes a subject thesaurus to assist you in searching using the appropriate terminology. Also helpful with graphic design, psychology, and anthropology research.
ProQuest (Combined) This link opens in a new window
Full-text for a wide range of subjects. Includes more than 3,850 titles—over 2,600 in full text—from 1971 forward. It features a diversified mix of scholarly journals, trade publications, magazines, and newspapers.
Opposing Viewpoints This link opens in a new window
Full-text resource covering today’s hottest social issues, from Terrorism to Endangered Species, Stem Cell Research to Gun Control. Another good starting point for research.
JSTOR This link opens in a new window
JSTOR contains full-text coverage of a wide range of academic journals. Particularly relevant to communication students are journals in sociology, anthropology, and politics.
3 to 5 year embargo means the most current articles will not be found here.
PsycNet This link opens in a new window
Depending on your topic, PsycNet, a psychology database, may be very useful for you. It is published by the American Psychological Association and contains the full-text (and links to the full text) of journal articles, book chapters, conference presentations, and more.

Finding the Full Text of articles

While many of your search results will include "full-text" (meaning the actual article, not just a summary/abstract), others have only an abstract. So, what do you do when you find an article that is exactly what you need, but the database does not have PDF or HTML links for the full text?

That button will search all of our other databases, and our print periodicals too, and tell you if the article is available through our library (and where to find it).

If you get this message:

this means that the library does not have access to this article at all. If that happens, you can still request the article through Interlibrary Loan and we'll get it for you from another library. Just click the "Request this item" button, or fill out a blank form here, or ask a librarian for help.
