eBooks: How do I use them?: Downloading to Adobe Digital Editions

Downloading ebooks available in PDF or ePub format protected with Adobe DRM to Adobe Digital Editions

Introduction

Any ebook on the Ebook Central platform and the majority of the ebooks on the EBSCOHost platform can be downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions. Before you can download an ebook in ePub or PDF format  to Abode Digital Editions you need to download and install Adobe Digital Editions onto your computer. After the designated checkout time the .epub or .pdf file will remain on your computer or device, but it will become unreadable. You may then want to delete the (unreadable) file to avoid confusion.

Download Adobe Digital Editions

To download Adobe Digital Editions go to http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/.

During installation of Adobe Digital Editions there should be an option to either Authorize Computer or Don’t Authorize Computer. Select Authorize Computer and login with your Adobe ID and Password (which you can get from the same screen if you don’t have one).

As given here (see the question 'What is the maximum number of computers and devices that I can authorize?' you are able to download or transfer the same ebook to up to 6 computers, tablet devices, and mobile devices where either Adobe Digital Editions or an app like Bluefire is installed and authorized with the same Adobe ID.

If you select Don’t Authorize Computer, you cannot transfer an Adobe DRM protected ebook that you have downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions on a given computer to any other device.

If at any point you wish to deauthorize Adobe Digital Editions, just open Adobe Digital Editions and then type Ctrl + Shift + D.

What is Digital Rights Management (DRM)?

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is copyright protection for an electronic product that limits the length of the loan of the downloaded ebook, and the amount of copying and printing.

Many tablet devices/smartphones/ebook readers and applications now support Adobe DRM. On a computer the free Adobe Digital Editions is needed to access (read) downloaded Adobe DRM protected content on your computer.

Downloading ebooks protected with Adobe DRM (such as Ebook Central and Ebooks on Ebscohost) to Adobe Digital Editions

EBook Central

When you are reading the ebook online in the Ebook Central Online Reader click the small Download icon up top.

Next, select the length of time you want to have access to the downloaded ebook and click the Download button. Adobe Digital Editions will then open on your computer and the EBL ebook will be automatically downloaded.

After the designated access time the .pdf file will remain on your computer or device, but it will be unreadable. Once it times out, you might want to delete the (unreadable) file to avoid confusion.

Ebooks on EBSCOHost

Download an eBook title from EBSCOhost by clicking on the Download link on the search result page or from within the detailed record. Select your preferred checkout period and click Checkout & Download. Adobe Digital Editions will then open on your computer and the Ebooks on EBSCOHost ebook will then be automatically downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions. You will then be able to read the downloaded ebook for the length of the download period you selected in Ebooks on EBSCOHost.
